Tour Policies

Visitor & Tour Policies/Procedures

Visitor Guidelines

Admission is required for entry to the museum and for interpretive programming provided by Bushy Run Battlefield staff and tour guides, both indoors and on the grounds.

The battlefield grounds and walking trails are open to the public free of charge from dawn to dusk, seven (7) days per week. However, certain areas of the property are designated as “admission required,” and signage is posted accordingly where proof of admission is necessary for access to interpretive areas and programs. Visitors are encouraged to check in at the Edge Hill Gift Shop with any questions regarding access or admission requirements.

Use of the grounds, trails, and all outdoor areas is at the visitor’s own risk.

All dogs must be kept on a leash at all times while on Bushy Run Battlefield property.

Private use of the property, including the pavilion and other designated facilities, must be reserved in advance through the Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society in accordance with established rental policies.

Accessibility

Handicapped parking is available in designated spaces, with paved pathways providing access to the museum entrance. The primary pathway from the accessible parking area to the front doors of the museum is approximately 250 feet in length.

Wheelchairs and walkers are permitted within the museum and on the grounds at the visitor’s discretion. Terrain conditions on the battlefield may vary, and portions of the property are unpaved and uneven.

Staff-operated golf cart tours of the battlefield are available upon request. Visitors requiring assistance or accommodations are encouraged to inquire at the Edge Hill Gift Shop upon arrival.

Service animals are permitted in all buildings and on all grounds in accordance with applicable law. All service animals must remain leashed at all times.

Backpacks

No bags or backpacks may be carried on a visitor’s back during museum or golf cart tours.

Photography

Photography and videography for personal, non-commercial use are permitted on the grounds and within the museum at the discretion of Bushy Run Battlefield staff and tour guides.

Professional, staged, or organized photography sessions—including, but not limited to, graduation, wedding, engagement, prom, portrait, or family photoshoots—are not permitted anywhere on the property (including trails, grounds, and exterior areas) unless previously arranged and approved through the Bushy Run Battlefield Heritage Society.

All approved photoshoots must be scheduled in advance and coordinated with staff. Information regarding permitted photography sessions and scheduling requirements is available by contacting the Museum Shop or visiting our website.

Unscheduled or unauthorized commercial or staged photography sessions may be asked to cease or relocate at staff discretion.

Smoking & Vaping

Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited in all buildings and throughout the grounds of Bushy Run Battlefield, with the exception of designated smoking areas.

A designated smoking area is located near the pavilion. All smoking materials, including cigarettes and related waste, must be fully extinguished and properly disposed of in provided receptacles.

Visitors are expected to comply with this policy at all times to support the preservation, safety, and enjoyment of the historic site.

Pets

Pets are permitted on the grounds of Bushy Run Battlefield. All pets must remain on a leash at all times and under the control of their owner or handler.

With the exception of service animals, pets are not permitted inside any buildings.

Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their animals and properly disposing of all waste.

Failure to comply with this policy may result in being asked to leave the property and/or loss of future access privileges.

Food and Drink

Picnic tables are available for visitor use at the pavilion on site.

Bottled water may be purchased at the Edge Hill Gift Shop, and limited concessions may be available when operational.

Food, beverages, and chewing gum are not permitted beyond the front desk area of the museum. Visitors are asked to consume all food and drink in designated outdoor areas only and to help maintain the cleanliness and preservation of the historic facility.

Cell Phones

We ask that you please turn off or silence cell phones while touring the museum and grounds with a tour guide.

Visiting with Children

Strollers are permitted on the grounds and in the museum. Parents of active or restless young children may be asked to take turns touring the museum as a courtesy to other visitors.

Severe Weather

Western Pennsylvania is subject to sudden and severe weather events, including thunderstorms, high winds, and lightning. In recent years, the property has also experienced extreme weather activity, and conditions can change rapidly without warning.

In the event of severe weather, visitors must immediately seek shelter in designated safe structures, including the Edge Hill Gift Shop and the Stone Room Museum. The pavilion, open grounds, wooded areas, and sheltering under trees are not safe locations during storms and must be avoided.

Visitors are expected to exercise caution, monitor weather conditions, and follow all staff instructions during weather emergencies to ensure personal safety.

Public Safety

Bushy Run Battlefield maintains an active historic collection that may include period weapons, artifacts, and interpretive materials utilized for educational purposes.

All weapons, including but not limited to firearms, knives, edged weapons, and other sharp or potentially hazardous objects, are strictly prohibited on the premises except where explicitly authorized by Bushy Run Battlefield staff for approved interpretive or educational programming.

Black powder firearms and any related historic weaponry are to be handled solely by trained and authorized Bushy Run Battlefield staff members. At no time may visitors, volunteers, or non-authorized individuals handle, operate, or interfere with any museum-owned weapons or interpretive arms.

For the safety of all guests and staff, compliance with these rules is mandatory. Unauthorized handling of any weapon or artifact may result in removal from the property and further restriction of access.

Lost and Found

Any item left unattended on the property will be taken to the lost and found in Edge Hill Gift Shop. People missing items can call 724-527-5584.

Restroom Facilities

Restroom facilities are available on-site for paid-visitor use only. Indoor public restrooms are located within the museum; however, access may be restricted during large events due to limitations of the site’s septic system.

An outdoor park restroom facility is located adjacent to the pavilion and is available for general use. During high-attendance events, additional portable restroom facilities may be provided to accommodate increased visitation.

Visitors are encouraged to plan accordingly during special events and follow posted signage and staff direction regarding restroom access.

Solicitation and Campaigning

Solicitation, vendor activity, and the sale or promotion of products or services are strictly prohibited on Bushy Run Battlefield property unless expressly authorized in advance by the President or BRBHS Board.

This includes, but is not limited to, the distribution of promotional materials, fundraising activities, commercial sales, and any form of on-site solicitation.

In accordance with applicable Pennsylvania state park guidelines, no political campaigning, political fundraising, or partisan political activity is permitted on the property.

Individuals or groups found in violation of this policy may be required to cease activity immediately and may be asked to leave the premises.
